Continuing Medical Education
Many physicians refrain from approving Cannabis use by patients because they learned nothing about Cannabis in medical school and cannot knowledgeably advise patients about dosage, side effects, mechanism of action, etc. This talk by UCSF oncologist/AIDS specialist Donald Abrams, M.D. to residents at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center is an exceptionally clear overview of the medical Cannabis field. Rolando Tringale, MD, invited Dr. Abrams on behalf of the Family Medicine Residency Program. O’Shaughnessy’s arranged for videographer Chad Rea to tape the event. In compiling a list of conditions for which there is some evidence that CBD and THC are helpful, our starting point was a list of potential targets for Sativex, a Cannabis-plant extract made by GW Pharmaceuticals with approximately equal levels of the two main cannabinoids. We assume that the same conditions might be treatable by CBD-rich Cannabis. To the GW list we added some conditions that California clinicians and other researchers have suggested might be amenable to treatment by a CBD-THC mix. We expect the list to grow as patients report results.
The late Tod Mikuriya, MD, compiled a master list of conditions that patients have reported using high-THC Cannabis to treat effectively (as documented by doctors in the Society of Cannabis Clinicians). Here's the list as of 2005. Cannabinoids can be used to treat such a wide range of conditions because they modulate the intensity of neurotransmission in many bodily systems.
